The Sagrada Familia, a building still to be completed

The architect of this famous basilica is, as we mentioned above, Antoni Gaudi. Antoni Gaudi has designed several special and famous buildings in Barcelona, but the Sagrada Familia is by far the most famous.

The History of the Sagrada Familia

From 1882 to 1926, Antoni Gaudi himself was intensively involved in the construction of the Sagrada Familia. It was his project and he took care of all the details. Sadly, in 1926, Antoni Gaudi died in a tram accident in his beloved city of Barcelona and was never allowed to complete the construction of the Sagrada Familia. At the time of his death, only a quarter of the construction of the Sagrada Familia had been completed.

In recent years there has been a lot of discussion about the construction of the Sagrada Familia, especially about the choice of materials. Many are of the opinion that the Sagrada Familia will be finished with building materials that Antoni Gaudi himself would never have chosen. It was always said that the Sagrada Familia would be completely finished according to the idea and design of Antoni Gaudi. Due to the use of other materials, this seems to have deviated a bit in recent years. You can see this, for example, by the color of the facade. The front and back don't seem quite the same in color. Moreover, you can really see a difference in the architectural styles from when construction just started and the way of building with which the Sagrada Familia is finished.

When the Sagrada Familia is completely finished, this basilica will have no less than 18 towers. 12 of these towers represent the 12 apostles. 4 towers represent the evangelists and 1 tower is for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Then there is only the highest tower of the Sagrada Familia and this of course stands for Jesus Christ.

The Sagrada Familia, the tomb of Antoni Gaudi

What you may not know is that Antoni Gaudi is buried under this basilica. The grave of this famous architect is located in an underground floor of the building. When you visit the Sagrada Familia, you can also visit the tomb of Antoni Gaudi. His tomb is surrounded by four chapels. These four chapels are each dedicated to a different Catholic figure. The chapel in which Antoni Gaudi is buried is dedicated to the Virgin El Carmen.

The Sagrada Familia is truly the pearl of Barcelona and a combination of art, culture and history. You probably won't find anyone who isn't impressed after a visit to this basilica. The Sagrada Familia is definitely an attraction that you simply must visit during your visit to Barcelona.
