Watching wildlife in Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve, South Africa
During a visit to South Africa, spotting wildlife should of course be on the program. And for this you do not necessarily have to go to the most well-known and large game parks, because the smaller game parks such as Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve are definitely worth a visit.
Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve, a small game park in Kwazulu-Natal
Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve is a wildlife park in Kwazulu-Natal. It is a small game park of approximately 4,400 hectares. It is located at the foot of the Spioenkop mountain and in the middle is a large calm lake with the dry Savannah around it, which gives it a unique appearance. The environment of the park alone gives a completely serene feeling.

No danger in Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve
The nice thing about Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve is that only the friendly animals live here. In the Kruger Park, for example, it is really forbidden to get out of the car because of the danger of wild animals. In Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve you can get out and try to take that one photo up close. But not too close, these are still wild animals in their own natural environment and that makes them unpredictable to intruders. The different animals you can see in Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve include zebras, white rhinoceroses, different species of antelope, wildebeest and a wide variety of birds.
Wildlife at Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve
Upon entering Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve, we were immediately rewarded with a few zebras that were only a few meters away from our car. This was our first encounter with wild animals in South Africa and of course we couldn't resist getting out of the car. The animals did not react anxiously to this and we were able to get quite close. Of course you can often get close to animals in the zoo, but when they live in the wild it gives a completely different feeling. It was also a special moment for the children in Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve.

Lots of animals in Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve
Of course we didn't get off all the animals we saw, but we really saw enough. We saw whole herds running across the Savannah and even animals fighting each other at Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve. In Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve there are several picnic areas next to the water where you can really enjoy the area with a snack and a drink. And if you've had enough of sitting in the car, you can also walk on one of the hiking trails in Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve, where you can also see some animals up close with a bit of luck.
Unfortunately we did not walk these trails, because unfortunately we did not have time for it. If we had had more time, we would certainly have done this. Because encountering wild animals on foot is just a bit more impressive than in the car.
