Because there are so many beautiful nature parks in Drenthe, there are a lot of walking routes. There are hiking trails of 2 kilometers, but you can also easily walk 20 kilometers.

The Plankenpad is located in Dwingelderveld National Park. Dwingelderveld National Park is perhaps the most beautiful nature reserve in the Netherlands. It is a beautiful nature reserve for spotting animals, cycling or having a picnic. And it is also a beautiful nature reserve for hiking.
Our favorite hiking route in Dwingelderveld National Park is the Plankenpad.
The name of this walking route comes from the wooden platforms that have been laid over the water of the marsh landscape here. The walking route over these platforms is the highlight of this walking route. Unfortunately, only the last part of this 5.5-kilometer walking route consists of these planks.
The rest of the walking route takes you past various parts of Dwingelderveld National Park. You walk between the dense mosses, but also through the beautiful meadows. And if you're lucky, you'll spot a highlander in the vast moors.
The start of this walking route starts at the Oude Postweg car park in Spier. There are several hiking trails from this parking lot. At the entrance of Dwingelderveld National Park, immediately turn right, walking parallel to the parking lot. The start of this walking route is easy to miss if you walk straight ahead just a few meters too far. We speak from experience.

The Acht van Amen is perhaps the most romantic walking route in Drenthe. The Acht van Amen walking route is located in the north of Drenthe, in the Nationaal Park de Drentsche Aa.
The Drentse Aa, a large stream that meanders through the landscape of this nature reserve, flows through this beautiful nature reserve.
This winding stream with all its branches surrounded by the marsh of the Drentsche Aa National Park give this landscape its romantic appearance.
Walking route de Acht van Amen is a walking route of about 5 kilometers long. The starting point is the village of Amen. This is also the end point.
Walk through the woods and along the water of the Aa in a walking route of approx. 1.5 to 2 hours in total.
Views and walking at altitude are not exactly what you would expect in the mainly flat landscape of Drenthe. But they have Drenthe span> came up with something. But they went one step further with the Boomkroonpad.

You do need tickets to walk between the tops of the trees on the Boomkroonpad.

You will encounter this highlight right at the start of your route. You really have to climb this tower, because the view is really beautiful. For people with a fear of heights, the first minutes at the top may be exciting. But soon you get over it and it is mainly the view that will attract your attention. This 360-degree panoramic view will make you want to pause for a moment.
Wandelroute Schapenpark runs through the woods of Exloo-Odoorn and is 7.5 kilometers long. In these forests, the trees alternate with vast heaths. You walk past an old sheepfold to finally arrive at the Schapenpark. If you're lucky, you'll meet sheep here. But cows and/or horses can also cross your path on this route.
At the start of the route there is also restaurant 'de Pools Hoogte". Great for a drink or something to eat at the end of your walking route.

Walking route Melkwegpad i Bospad is a path that goes to camp Westerbork.
You can of course take the shuttle bus at the info center and skip this entire walking route. But believe us, this walking route is really nice.
It is a walk of only about 1.5 kilometers to camp Westerbork and 1.5 kilometers back on the same path.
Along the walking route there are information boards for children that tell you everything about the different planets and stars. And the best part is the experiments along the way. For example, you can talk into a real satellite and test gravity.
At the end of this route, when you are almost at Camp Westerbork, you will walk past the radio observatory.
